For decades, one message has been repeated to young Malaysians:

Get a degree.

A degree has traditionally been seen as a pathway to a better career, higher income and greater job security.

And there is still truth in that.

Malaysia had 5.98 million graduates in 2024, an increase of 4.1% from the previous year. Graduate unemployment also declined to 3.2%, while degree holders recorded a median monthly salary of RM5,724, compared with RM3,390 for diploma holders.

So this isnโ€™t an argument against university education.

The more interesting question is:

Is getting one degree early in your career enough for the next 30 or 40 years of working life?

Increasingly, the answer appears to be no.

Malaysiaโ€™s labour market is changing faster than many traditional education pathways.

Upskilling

You learn additional skills for your existing career.

An accountant learns data analytics.

A technician learns industrial automation.

A designer learns AI-assisted design.

A manager learns data visualisation.

Youโ€™re becoming better at what you already do.

Reskilling

You learn a new set of skills that can move you into a different role or career direction.

Malaysia already has infrastructure designed around continuous workforce development.

HRD Corp reported that in 2025 it approved RM2.62 billion in financial assistance for training and skills development, covering more than 2.8 million training places across its programmes and schemes.

The organisation also reported more than 103,000 training places across digital-economy and ICT sectors in 2025.

And this is important.

โ€œGet people into classrooms.โ€

The real goal should be:

Someone can attend a course, receive a certificate and forget most of it six months later.

Did they move into a higher-value role?

Did their salary increase?

Did the company reduce errors or improve efficiency?

These are much more meaningful measures than simply counting certificates.


What Malaysia Actually Needs

It isnโ€™t:

More degrees.

Or:

More training.

It is something more specific.

Better alignment between education, skills and actual economic demand.

When those three overlap, you get something powerful:

Relevant skills.

But if education moves in one direction while industry moves somewhere else, workers can end up with qualifications that arenโ€™t fully utilised.

One interesting way to think about the future workforce is skill stacking.

Instead of trying to become the worldโ€™s best person at one narrow skill, someone combines several useful capabilities.

So, Do We Need Fewer Degrees?

โ€œWhat skills will make my degree more valuable?โ€

An engineering student could add:

A communications student could add:

The degree gives you the domain.

Additional skills give you leverage.

Donโ€™t wait until your job disappears.

Watch your industry.

What technology is changing my job?

What tasks are becoming automated?

What skills are becoming more valuable?

What skills are employers starting to ask for?

Then start learning before the market forces you to.

Reskilling after disruption

Reskilling before disruption.


The Bigger Question for Malaysia

Malaysiaโ€™s economic ambition isnโ€™t simply to employ more people.

The country wants to move toward higher-value economic activities and stronger productivity.

That requires more than increasing the number of people holding certificates.

It requires workers who can actually perform increasingly complex tasks.

โ€œHow many graduates does Malaysia produce?โ€

It should be:

โ€œHow quickly can Malaysiaโ€™s workforce acquire the skills its next economy requires?โ€

Thatโ€™s a much harder question.

But potentially a much more important one.

Malaysia doesnโ€™t need to choose between degrees and reskilling.

It needs both.

Universities provide foundational knowledge, critical thinking and professional preparation.

Reskilling keeps that knowledge relevant as industries evolve.

The bigger danger isnโ€™t having too many educated people.

Itโ€™s having people who are highly educated but increasingly disconnected from the skills their economy needs.

And that is why the future of Malaysian workforce development may depend less on:
